Miles of Trees

ommunity Development International (CDI) would like to introduce you to our new collaborative environmental "Miles of Trees" program! Miles of Trees will feature a 350 mile three-day cycling trip from New York City, NY to Virginia Beach, VA that will not only raise great awareness about the benefits of cycling and environmental issues but will raise funding for the planting of new trees in the most needed areas throughout New York City, NY and Virginia Beach, VA that are in the most need and is looking to partner with the NYC Parks Department, the local NYC Community Boards, the Virginia Beach City Council and Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation Department. On top of this, we will be featuring a matching program that will match the number of trees planted both in NYC and Virginia and plant that same amount of trees in a fledgling National Forest in Haiti where CDI is currently working on various projects. In the Fall of 2011 all trees will be delivered to the respective locations between Haiti, New York City and Virginia Beach, VA and a "Tree Planting Festival" will be planned in collaboration with local governmental agencies to happen on the same day or relative time-frame between all three locations internationally!
Details:
The group of cyclists participating in the Miles of Trees ride (between 2 to 5 riders) are experienced amateur road cyclists of which several have ridden in century rides and other long distance rides throughout the US over the past seven years. The ride will take place from Thursday June 30th to Saturday July 2nd and will cover about 350 miles in these three days. The start point will be in Newark, NJ at 6 am on the 29th where the cyclists will be available for pictures and interviews before boarding the Ferry to Bedford Harbor, NJ. Day 1 will be comprised of a 108 mile ride from Newark, NJ to Pomona, NY. Day 2 will take the riders another 100 miles from Pomona, NJ over Cape May and south to Salisbury, MD. Day 3 will take the riders 80 miles from Salisbury, MD to Kiptopeke, VA just a mile or so north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel where they will be picked up to be driven over the bridge tunnel and dropped off to finish the remaining 15 miles from the south side of the bridge tunnel to the Virginia Beach Ocean Front for an arrival celebration at the 31st street park where the riders will also be available for pictures and interviews, and followed by a party at a beach location to be announced with live music, drinks and food!
Purpose:
CDI is committed to environmental protection and restoration globally and aims to achieve the following goals with our Miles of Trees program:
1. Raise awareness for environmental protection and restoration issues including the benefits of cycling
2. Raise funding to secure 1 tree per mile per rider to be planted evenly between locations with the most need in the metro New York City area, Virginia Beach, VA and Seguin, Haiti. Each rider will be able to raise funding for about 300 to 350 trees depending on exact mileage rode.

In support of and in collaboration with the United Nations 2011 International Year of Forests Community Development International (CDI) would like to introduce you to our new collaborative environmental "Miles of Trees" program!

Miles of Trees offers teams and individuals the opportunity to participate in bike rides and walks / runs to raise funds towards the planting of 1,000 locally appropriate species of fruit-bearing and non-fruit bearing trees in Seguin, Haiti. This reforestation effort in partnership with our local partner organization Fondation Seguin will help to prevent erosion and loss of agricultural productivity while beautifying the natural landscape and providing long-term opportunities for eco-enterprise. Like with any familiar awareness or fund raising walks, participants will be featured on our website and be given the opportunity to raise funds as part of the team by means of soliciting individual support from friends, colleagues, family and beyond.

Miles of Trees was officially announced at our May 2011 panel event on Forest Management and Conservation Best Practices. It was launched at the end of June when CDI co-founders rode 350 miles over the course of three days from Newark, NJ to Virginia Beach, VA. Click here to view images of this trip.

At this time, CDI will be participating in the New York Century ride on September 18 and in the Philadelphia Marathon on November 20 (more to come). Confirmed riders and runners are listed below. If you would like to participate and help us raise funds for our reforestation efforts, please email to milesoftrees@cd-international.org.  The objective is to identify sponsors who will pledge a minimum of $1 per mile in whichever activity.

If you would like to donate and support the team or an individual, please make use of the secure paypal checkout.

Marilena Hatoupis

I've always wanted to know what I'm made of as a runner - can I go the distance or am I just a sprinter? Running a marathon is a test of perseverance and persistence. I'm sure I'll hit quite a few hurdles along the way but when I run out of steam I'll remember that's I'm not just running for myself but for the ideals that CDI encompasses and that for sure will keep me going.

Dominique Gagne

I'm a freelance jazz flutist, pianist, composer and educator. I'm running for Haiti because I play piano in Haitian guitarist Monvelyno Alexis' band, Kod Ak Po. I was introduced to the work of CDI while playing at CDI-sponsored fundraisers in the city. When I signed up for the Philadelphia Marathon, I knew right away that I wanted to run for CDI/Haiti.

The beginning of last summer a friend asked me to join him running. I’ve always stayed active either going to the gym or playing soccer, but never just running. Before the year was over I trained and ran my first marathon, which happened to be the Philly marathon. This year I’ll run it again, but for team CDI. If I can help CDI raise funds by running the Philly marathon, count me in.
